The Expanse Roleplaying Game: Where we've been and where we're going!
over 3 years ago – Fri, Sep 04, 2020 at 01:30:19 PM

Welcome to week three of our campaign!

We know a lot of folks are already fans of the Expanse RPG, and excited for these new Dice Sets. Many of you even backed the previous Kickstarter for the core rulebook and GM Screen. But we thought you might like a quick look at what's coming up for the line, and if you're just checking out the Expanse RPG for the first time (we see you dice-collectors!), you might be interested in what's already available for the game.

Here's Ian to explain more.

Hey everyone, this is Ian Lemke, the developer for The Expanse Roleplaying Game. I figured with so much attention on The Expanse Dice Sets, this would be an excellent time to fill folks in on the current state of the game. The Kickstarter for The Expanse RPG launched almost two years ago and was an immediate success – fully funding in less than a day! Since then, we’ve released several expansions for the game, including a very cool Game Master’s Kit that includes: a GM Screen , Quick Reference Sheets, and a new adventure called Ganymede Insurance Job. Soon after came Abzu’s Bounty, a six-part mini-campaign that takes place early in the core setting and takes the characters from one end of the solar system to the other. The adventures are designed to be part of the larger story, but most of them work just as well as stand-alone stories. If you’re looking for adventures, you can get Salvage Op as a PDF only, and new PDF adventures will soon be joining that roster. If you’re curious about The Expanse and haven't played yet, you can download The Expanse RPG Quickstart for free! The Quickstart has everything you need to play, including the core rules, six pre-gen characters, and a great adventure called Cupbearer.

As you can see, there’s currently a lot of cool stuff out there to get you started, but we’ve really just begun. Ships of the Expanse has been written, and we’re hard at work on making the deck plans many of you have been waiting for. Not only will Ships feature these awesome deck plans, but it contains a ton of new information to use in your games. You’ll find details on shipyards, information on what life is like on board a ship, new shipboard vehicles such as drones, new rules for ship combat, and of course stats and write-ups for a ton of new ships!

Ships of the Expanse, coming soon!

After Ships we move the timeline forward a bit with Beyond the Ring. With this book we leave the Sol system behind and explore the mysteries beyond the Sol Ring. There are details on the Slow Zone, the Ring Station, Medina Station, summaries of worlds that have been mentioned in the series, and detailed descriptions for over two dozen completely new worlds! There are also rules for creating your own worlds and allowing players to manage their own colonies.

So there you have it – the exploration of The Expanse has only begun! I hope you’ll come along for the ride. We have many future releases planned, so keep your hand terminals tuned to https://greenronin.com/ for future releases.

The Expanse RPG via Red Moon Roleplaying
over 3 years ago – Tue, Sep 01, 2020 at 09:48:15 AM

Oye, beltalowda!

Earlier this week, our very own Expanse RPG developer Ian Lemke did a guest appearance on Red Moon Roleplaying as the Gamemaster. Red Moon is an ENnie-award winning podcast which presents their actual play games in a similar fashion to Audio Dramas and Radio Plays, complete with thematic music and occasional sound effects for dramatic tension. We think they're pretty amazing.

If you're curious about the Expanse RPG and haven't had the opportunity to give it a try yet, or even if you're an existing fan and you just enjoy listening to actual-play podcasts, give it a listen. You won't be sorry.

Here comes the juice!

Bell Curves, Criticals, and the Odds of Doubles

Hey there Screaming Firehawks,

We've had a great first few days on this campaign already. We funded in 6 hours, and we're already well on our way to the Protogen Dice sets as an add-on to your pledges! We're incredibly excited to see those Dice come to life and can't wait to reach that milestone.

Earlier today our very own Fantasy AGE developer, Owen KC Stephens, wrote an interesting blog article about how the 3d6 dice mechanic in our AGE roleplaying games works. He really breaks down the statistics in a way we found interesting and compelling, and so we asked him if it would be all right to share his article directly with the backers here!

Whether you're an existing fan of The Expanse RPG, or brand new to our games and the "Stunt Die" mechanic, you'll undoubtedly find Owen's article worth your time.

Take it away Owen!

“I keep warning you. Doors and corners, kid. That's where they get you."

"The various AGE (Adventure Game Engine) games from Green Ronin all have the same core mechanic — to see if you succeed at something, roll 3d6, one of which is a “Stunt Die.” Add the 3d6 and any bonus you have, and compare to a target number.

If any two of your dice are doubles (they have the same value), you earn “stunt points,” equal to the value of the stunt die.

In this article, I want to talk a bit about bell curves, critical success systems in RPGs, and  what the odds are you’ll get doubles when your roll 3d6. And I’m using pictures of the Expanse RPG Dice Sets, since they are cool-looking and currently being crowdfunded on Kickstarter."
